Loomis protects more trees than its neighbors

Loomis has one of the stricter tree ordinances in Placer County. Under Town Code Chapter 13.54, protected trees include interior live oak, valley oak, and oracle oak at 6 inches DBH or more, blue oak at 4 inches or more, and multi-trunk oaks with a combined 10 inches or more.

Removing a protected tree takes a tree permit from the Town, even on a small residential lot. On residential parcels zoned 4.6 acres or less that can't be subdivided further, the permit carries no fee and no replacement-tree requirement.

When a permit isn't the hold-up

  • Dead, dying, or hazardous trees rated 0 to 2 by the Town or an approved arborist need no replacement trees. Photos may be required.
  • Emergencies. If a tree is an imminent threat to life or property, you can act first and notify the Town by the next working day.
  • Pruning is allowed as long as it doesn't harm a protected tree.

Summary of Loomis Town Code 13.54, checked November 2026. Confirm with the Town of Loomis before work starts.
